Fountains have been creating and managing forests in the UK for nearly 50 years. As a result of these activities, forestry managers are involved in various aspects of wildlife management. We work alongside government bodies such as the Environment Agency, English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Forestry Commission and the Deer Commission for Scotland.

Work has involved the creation and enhancement of habitats for rare species such as the Pearl-bordered Fritillary in the South of England to the Black Cock Grouse in the Highlands. In the summer months, forest rangers liaise with wildlife groups to prevent disturbance to sensitive species of ground nesting birds by forest operations. Close liaison is maintained between the rangers and specialist ornithologists with regard to raptors. Merlin, Hen Harrier, Goshawk and Peregrine Falcons all nest and hunt within the woodlands we manage.

The ranger’s job is to primarily protect the trees from wildlife damage although protection of sensitive species is part of the daily discipline. Uncontrolled deer populations within woodland can cause irreparable damage to the crop. Rangers are employed to manage these populations through stalking and culling. In order to maximise the commercial potential for the woodland owner, and to promote efficient wildlife management practices, there are sporting and wildlife management opportunities with Fountains.
