Broome Hill

Broom Hill wood lies in the rolling hills to the west of Dorchester and is owned by a privately funded charity devoted to conservation, regeneration and establishment of trees. This area of Dorset has little tree cover and the planting was designed to make a substantial contribution to the local landscape.

Broom HillFountains Forestry were responsible for the planting of approximately 400,000 trees over 200 hectares; one of the largest planting projects in England. Three phases of planting were implemented with subsequent years of maintenance and care to ensure good establishment and the protection of the trees.

There have been many positive benefits for wildlife in response to the change in micro-environment. Skylarks, nightjars and partridges are now in abundance. As the stands develop, flora and fauna species more characteristic of woodland will become established.

The current involvement of Fountains Forestry is in the management of public access and conservation so Broom Hill wood can be enjoyed by future generations.
