National Grid

Fountains Forestry carried out a large GPS vegetation survey project contract for National Grid. The survey was conducted on 22500 overhead lines throughout all of England and Wales. Up to 25 surveyors were involved in the project which took careful planning due to the geographic spread of the project area.

Scope of Work:

GPS survey and laser range finding equipment was used to gather the following information:

  • The closest tree to the overhead line inside each span
  • ID the tree species and its growth rate
  • Density of trees within each span
  • Height of trees within each span

All information was exported from the field location to a central geodatabase and was then presented to both contractor and customer through the use of ESRI ArcIMS software to highlight the state of the network regarding vegetation management.
